City Receives Grant To Purchase Apalachicola Boat Works

City Receives Grant To Purchase Apalachicola Boat Works
The City of Apalachicola recently received more than $800,000 in grant funds through the Department of Community Affairs (DCA) Florida Communities Trust Program to purchase the former Apalachicola Boatworks Property on Water Street. The acquisition will expand the Apalachicola Maritime Museum and establish an educational commercial seafood boat building and restoration facility in the City. According to State officials, the purchase represents the first property to be acquired through the Stan Mayfield Working Waterfronts Florida Forever Grant Program.

"Traditional working waterfronts play an important role in the cultural and economic fabric of Florida's coastal communities," said DCA Secretary Tom Pelham. "I congratulate the City of Apalachicola for receiving this grant to protect a piece of its heritage and provide a much-needed service to the community."

According to DCA officials, the opening of this shop will provide commercial fishermen and seafood harvesters with access to repair facilities that are currently unavailable in the community, and train student workers in the craft of historic boat building and restoration. Florida Communities Trust awarded $814,703 in Florida Forever funds to the City of Apalachicola for this acquisition.
